However, during the beautiful autumn foliage season in November, it’s essential to consider that shadows increase in the afternoon, and it becomes dark around the 4:45 PM timeframe. Therefore, here’s my recommended itinerary:
- Day 1: Travel to Kurobe Gorge, deposit your luggage at the accommodation, and enjoy hiking around Unazuki Station.
- Day 2: Deposit your luggage at the accommodation, take the earliest train to Keyakidaira Station, and hike amidst the beautiful autumn foliage. Then, return from Keyakidaira Station to Unazuki Station in time for your onward travel to other destinations.

The facility includes a tourist information center on the first floor, providing valuable insights into the region’s attractions and sightseeing spots. It’s an ideal place to immerse yourself in local charm while planning your adventures.
Yumedomo Unazuki is open from 9 AM to 10 PM (with reception until 9 PM) and charges a modest fee of 510 yen per adult. The facility is closed every Tuesday and, from May to November, also on the fourth Tuesday of the month. With its reasonable prices, this facility offers a serene experience and is a must-visit destination when exploring Unazuki Onsen.
Tochinoyu:
Located just a 5-minute drive from Unazuki Onsen Station and situated at the endpoint of the Yamabiko Promenade, “Tochinoyu” is a day-use hot spring facility seamlessly integrated with nature. It offers a captivating experience, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the beauty of Unazuki.
Positioned 4.5 kilometers away from Unazuki Onsen Station, it’s easily accessible with a short 5-minute drive. Alternatively, visitors can opt for a leisurely walk to the facility, enjoying the scenic beauty along the way.
At “Tochinoyu,” guests can indulge in the open-air baths while marveling at the autumn foliage of the surrounding mountains and the shimmering emerald-green dam lake right before their eyes. Trekking
If you’re feeling up for a rewarding hike and want to fully immerse yourself in the beauty of this area, you might consider trekking to the Panorama Observatory. This vantage point offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of the Kurobe Gorge. To reach there, you can take the steep trail next to the Keyakidaira Visitor Center, and it takes approximately 80 minutes of trekking.
This challenging climb provides a wonderful opportunity to experience the grandeur of nature. During the trek, you’ll be surrounded by the stunning scenery of crimson-colored mountains and abundant wildlife, offering a refreshing experience for both your body and soul. Please be aware that reservations cannot be made for rides from “Kuronagi Station,” so it’s essential to check the availability of passenger cars beforehand.
Sightseeing Spots Around Kaneturi Station
The region surrounding Kaneturi Station is well-known as a secluded hot spring paradise.
A short 15-minute stroll from Kaneturi Station takes you to a riverbank where natural hot springs bubble up wherever you dig. Enclose the area with stones, and you can fashion your own private foot bath, allowing yourself to be fully immersed in the embrace of nature for an incredibly indulgent experience.
A mere minute from the station stands the historic hot spring retreat, “Miyama-so“, an accommodation requiring reservations that traces its origins back to 1819.

Furthermore, in the distant past, precisely in the year 1645, Kuronagi Onsen was discovered. During that era, the existence of hot springs in this area remained unknown, and access was strictly prohibited. These hot springs, steeped in history, continue to captivate visitors with their enduring charm.

The route to Kurobe Gorge varies depending on your starting point, but regardless of your origin, you will always pass through JR Kurobe-Unazuki Onsen Station.

Getting from JR Kurobe-Unazuki Onsen Station
Upon arriving at JR Kurobe-Unazuki Onsen Station, you’ll head to the nearby Toyama Chihou Railway: Shinkurobe Station, just a 5-minute walk away. Here are the details:

Budget and Transportation Tips
About the Torokko Train
The Torokko train operates from mid-April to the end of November. The journey from the starting station, Unazuki, to the terminal station, Keyakidaira, takes approximately 80 minutes, and the round-trip fare is about 4,000 yen for adults.
There are two types of passenger cars on the Torokko train. The ordinary cars resemble mini trains in amusement parks, featuring roofs with open sides, providing a sense of openness to enjoy nature. However, during rainy weather, you might need rain gear. Additionally, there are tunnels along the route, so dressing warmly, especially from October onwards, is advisable. The relaxation cars have windows and are not affected by weather, but they come with an additional charge.
For the best view, choose seats on the right side of the train, except between Shimonoroka Station and Keyakidaira Station. Selecting the right seat is crucial for an enjoyable journey. Unfortunately, seat reservations are not available. Passengers often form queues before departure, securing their preferred seats from the front. Some travelers start lining up 30 to 40 minutes before departure to ensure a good view.
Please note that the number of seats on the Torokko train is limited. While tickets can sometimes be purchased at the station on the day of travel, it’s highly recommended to make an online reservation in advance. Even with a web reservation, you still need to pick up your ticket from the counter. Additionally, there are no restroom facilities on the train, and the station’s toilets can get crowded. Arrive at Unazuki Station with ample time to spare.
Regarding Luggage
When traveling on the Torokko train, it’s crucial to be mindful of your luggage. There is no space inside the passenger cars of the Kurobe Gorge Railway to store large items like suitcases. Although there are coin lockers at the station, they may not accommodate large items such as wheeled bags. Therefore, it’s essential to leave substantial luggage at your accommodation and carry only items that can fit at your feet during the trip. This ensures your convenience and the comfort of fellow passengers.
Weather Guide
Selecting the appropriate clothing is essential to fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty during your Kurobe Gorge Railway journey. Achieving a balance between comfort and warmth is key to relishing the picturesque landscapes.
Starting from early October, the autumn foliage gradually paints the scenery, making it ideal to wear long-sleeved shirts and a lightweight jacket for insulation. As the vibrant foliage continues until mid-November, thicker and warmer layers become necessary to stay comfortable and cozy.
